From the June 28 Lighthouse Point minutes comes interesting development news. “City Attorney Cirullo gave a brief summary of the process for commercial projects requiring platting, saying that Florida Retail Stores, LLC (Gordon Food Service (GFS)), submitted an application for Final Plat approval to allow for the construction of a 15,856 SF marketplace/specialty food store, and a 6,000 SF general retail building at 3260 North Federal Highway.	Commissioners discussed the development review process in general, including City Commission involvement during the process.”

Also noteworthy, “Public Requests from the Floor:
Mooneer Kahn, owner of Pompano One Price Dry Cleaners in Lighthouse Point, asked City Commissioners for an update on his request in February to consider allowing his Lighthouse Point location to receive clothes from another location, and also, to have more than five employees. City Administrator Lavisky responded that Administration would need nine to twelve months from the applicant’s request before any recommendations can be made.”

I don’t know any of the particulars, but as a business owner, waiting nearly a year to find out if you can grow your business seems like a long time if there is no building expansion. I’m betting the key here is questioning the environmental impact, but surely such a small town can move faster than this?

My mom saved this and sent it to me when my daughter was little. A few parts have been lost, but we’re still digging to see if we can find them. I always thought it was a Barbie, but now I know it’s Francie. The hangars have Francie’s name. At none time you could hang clothes in the little box area inside the case I think.

The Francie doll has real eyelashes, and brown eyes. It’s a twist and turn doll. The legs can bend into 3 positions. The left leg does not work correctly any more. It’s just a soft bend instead of locking into position. The hair and rest of doll is very nice, assuming it will clean up easy, and I made any attempt to clean it yet. It says made in Japan, 1965 under the head. It has trademark 1966 and made in Japan on rear, It has #21 on left rear. There is no green or stains around ears.

Lighthouse Point held a public hearing regarding the proposed property tax rate in 2010. The basic proposed millage rate per $1000 is 3.6188, the same as last year, despite a $200,000,000 drop in taxable value of real property for operating purposes. The property values are determined by the Broward County Property appraiser.

Kudos to Lighthouse Point for being able to hold the line for this particular item. As many people know, most of the property taxes we pay though are Broward County taxes, including Broward County Schools. They’re still trying to find ways to trim the budget. Surely there will be a hike, but how much is yet to be determined.

For those with inquisitive minds, the per property value drop is in the $20,000 range according to the property appraiser numbers. I have no idea how accurate the data on this source is, but I pulled this data off Yahoo real estate web site. http://realestate.yahoo.com/Florida/Lighthouse_Point. I find that many sites lump LHP data into Pompano because of a shared zip code. The last city meeting I attended there were only a handful of foreclosures so this number below seems quite high.

Lighthouse Point, FL Real Estate Market Snapshot
updated Monday, September 13, 2010
Listing Type Number Median Price Price Change
from Aug
Homes for Sale 221 $529,000 -11.8%
New Homes 0 n/a n/a
Foreclosures 195 $323,000 -0.9%

The Lighthouse Point Police Department will be accepting any controlled, non-controlled, and over the counter medications for disposal at Dixon Ahl Hall, 2220 NE 38 Street, on Saturday, September 25, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The purpose of this one day program is to bring national focus to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse. Many Americans are unaware that unused medicines in homes are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.

There’s another benefit though. Studies have shown there is a high incidence of drugs in ground water. Save the planet. Take your drugs to the police instead of throwing out or flushing them down the toilet.

You can read more about what’s in our drinking water on the US government site.

Review for why I won’t use the online comparison shopping widget by Where2LookOnline. It doesn’t include my own store products! The only products listed apparently are paid ads.

I entered the code and put into a blog post to test. Then I entered Bugatchi shirt, one of the products listed in my store. Up came my competitors, mostly Zappos. At least 1/3 of the items actually were no longer available. Their prices are usually higher than mine, unless they have limited sizes or colors.

I already knew most of the price comparison sites only have paid advertisements. Other sites like dealtime, pricegrabber, they all have the same concept. But how many regular shoppers out there know that? Using the portal to compare prices, won’t necessarily get you the best price. However, on certain items like computers, I do think it makes sense because all the main players are listed there. Not so for tons of other products from apparel to sporting goods.

Final note- skip the widget.
Final note 2- Zappos has many good points, but CEO golf shop customers say that shop at CEOgolfshop.com because there are more in stock colors and sizes, and the people are friendly and helpful.

Florida employers can hire low-income workers with up to 95% of pay covered by a new federal stimulus program aimed at putting jobless people back to work by subsidizing their pay and benefits through Sept. 30, 2010.
Offered to public and private companies, if a worker is paid $12 per hour, the expected average, the Florida back to work program would pay $11.40 and the business $.60.

“These funds will provide businesses throughout our state a tremendous opportunity to give someone in need a fresh start and a new direction for the future,” Gov. Charlie Crist said.

Workers must meet federal low-income guidelines and have at least one child under 18.

Florida is eligible for up to $200 million in stimulus money for the program. No state matching dollars are required.

Florida Back to Work job sites will be coordinated through Florida’s 24 regional workforce boards, which will link local businesses with eligible employees.

The online information about program details is a little weak. Broward refers employers to read American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Implementation Plan. This takes you to The Florida Office of Economic Recovery for information about Workforce Employment and Training
.
